Onion Theeyal

Onion Theeyal - A typical dish from the state of Kerala, the God's own country.

Theeyal is made using various vegetables like pearl onion or shallot, potato, brinjal, okra,  and raw mango.
Here,I have shared Onion Theeyal using Shallots.
Shallots are very beneficial for one's health. It has antioxidants & help manage seasonal allergies.

 Ingredients
- 20-25 shallots (small onion)
- 1 lemon sized tamarind
- 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 spoon powdered jaggery
- 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida powder (Hing)
- 1/2 spoon mustard seeds
- 10 curry leaves

- 2 spoon coriander seeds
- 1/2 spoon Fenugreek seeds
- 1 spoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 cup fresh  coconut pieces
- 5-6 red chilli
- 4 pepper corns
- 1/2 cup sesame oil/coconut oil

Method -
1. Peel off the skin from the shallots and do not cut the onions. Also soak the tamarind in half cup warm water for 20-25mins.

2. Take a pan add coriander seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, red chilli, pepper corns, coconut pieces and dry roast all the ingredients for about 5-6 mins and transfer it to a plate and allow it to cool down completely. Once it cools down grind it into a smooth thick paste by adding little water and keep it aside.

3. Next in the same pan add coconut/sesame oil, once the oil is hot add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and wait till it splutters.

4. Now add curry leaves, asafoetida powder, shallots, salt (as per your requirement) and saute it for one minute.

5. Now squash and strain the tamarind juice, pour it into the pan and throw the pulp away.

6. Next add turmeric powder, chilli powder, jaggery powder and boil the mixture for about 10-12mins.

7. Next add the grinded masala paste, 1/2 cup water (you can add more or less water to adjust the gravy consistency) and cook the mixture for 10-12mins.

8. Add 2 spoon raw coconut/sesame oil, mix it and switch off the flame.

Note:
1. If you do not have shallots you can use small sized regular onions. But I would recommend to use only shallots so that you can enjoy this recipe to the maximum.

2. Do not use sunflower oil for this recipe.

3. Serve Onion Theeyal hot with rice or as side dish with dosa, idli and roti.
